فن النحت والنقش على الحجر من أهم الفنون التشكيلية نظرا لاعتماده على تشكيل مجسمات تمثل إما شكل الإنسان أو الحيوان أو غيرها من الأشكال التجريدية على أنواع مختلفة من الحجارة .و يعتبر النحت من أقدم الفنون الموجودة منذ أزيد من أربعة آلاف سنة فهو أقدم حتى من فن التصوير .لقد كانت هذه الفنون طرق تعبير الإنسان القديم عن اهتماماته والأجواء المحيطة به. لقد مكن النحت الإنسان قديما من التعبير وحفظ التاريخ و الملاحم و الرموز والحكايات و توثيق الطقوس والعادات الانسانية. في منطقة بو قنادل شمال العاصمة الرباط، احتفظ المكان بورشات للنقش على الحجر تشهد على التاريخ وتحفظ الأثر ويشتغل بها حرفيون فنانون يتشبثون بمهنة الأجداد بالعمل على حفظها وصيانة أسرارها وتوريث مهاراتها للأجيال الصاعدة. انها حرفة ضاربة في القدم وإبداع عابر للتاريخ أثث أسوار المدن العتيقة والقلاع والحصون، وزين أبوابا تاريخية وصوامع المساجد الضخمة، وأعطى رونقا خاصا للبيوت الفاخرة وحتى القصور. إنها فن ومصدر عيش تختزن العصور، إنها عمل شاق يحفر في الصخر ليصنع الجمال في المدارات والأسوار.
